The Tonopah Low — The Forgotten Wind That Can Change Everything
Every region has a truth it lives with. In the West, one of those truths is wind — not the gentle kind, but the kind that can change a wildfire’s entire personality in minutes. Most people have heard of Santa Ana winds in Southern California, but few know where they really begin. They start in the Great Basin, in a pressure engine that includes the Mohave Basin, SW Nevada, and a specific atmospheric setup known as the Tonopah Low.
This is the forgotten wind. The one that doesn’t get headlines. The one that quietly shapes the West’s most dangerous fire days. Currently, the Interior West is experiencing the exact ingredients that empower it:
- Extreme heat in the Mohave Basin
- Ultra-dry terrain across Nevada and Utah
- Massive uncontained fires generating their own weather
- Plume-dominated behavior
- Pressure anomalies
- Multi-fire mergers
- Unstable atmospheric windows
Additionally, El Niño is adding more coastal lows off California. El Niño years typically bring:
- Increased troughing offshore
- More low-pressure systems near the coast
- More instability west of the Sierra
- More opportunities for offshore wind events
When coastal lows combine with Great Basin high pressure, the pressure gradient tightens — the exact setup that empowers a Tonopah Low. This isn’t a Santa Ana event, but it follows the same physics.
